# Why is my speed test result different from other speed tests?

The speed test in your system checks may show a warning even when Google or another speed test says your internet is fine. This happens because the two tests measure different things, and a warning doesn’t stop you from starting your exam. Talview’s speed test is designed to check how well your connection will hold up during a live, proctored exam, and the fixes below help you get the most stable connection before you begin.

#### 🔍 Troubleshooting common issues

| What Might Be Wrong | How to Fix It |
| :- | :- |
| Other speed tests connect to a server close to you | Most speed test websites measure your connection to the nearest server, which usually gives the fastest result. Our test checks your connection to the servers your exam actually runs on, which may be farther away. A different result is normal and doesn’t mean anything is wrong with your internet. |
| Your connection is fast but not steady | Our test also checks how stable your connection is, not only how fast it is. Wi-Fi signals can drop and recover from moment to moment. If you can, connect your device to your router with a cable, or move closer to your router, then run the test again. |
| A VPN or proxy is slowing your connection | VPNs and proxies route your traffic through another location, which can make the connection to our servers slower. Turn off any VPN or proxy and run the test again. |
| Other devices or apps are using your internet | Streaming, downloads, video calls, and cloud backups on your network can slow your connection during the test. Pause these and close apps you don’t need, then run the test again. |
| Your network limits certain connections | Some office, school, or public networks restrict connections to outside services. If you’re on one of these networks, try a personal home network or a mobile hotspot instead. |

> * To check the internet speed recommended for assessments and interviews, see [What are the recommended bandwidth and latency?](https://docs.talview.com/candidates/system-diagnostics/what-are-the-recommended-bandwidth-and-latency.md)
> * A speed test warning is only a warning. You can still start your exam, but a stronger connection helps your video and audio run smoothly throughout.
> * Run the speed test at the same time of day you plan to take your exam, since internet speeds can change during busy hours.
> * If the warning keeps appearing after trying these fixes, contact your recruiter or exam coordinator before your exam starts.
> * If your system check shows **Connectivity: Failed**, your device can’t reach our servers. See [How to resolve connection failure error](https://docs.talview.com/candidates/system-diagnostics/network-and-connectivity/how-to-resolve-connection-failure-error.md) before starting your exam.
